Description
Delia Smith’s Chestnut Stuffing is a traditional British stuffing made with chestnuts, onions, breadcrumbs, and herbs. The chestnuts add a unique sweetness and soft texture, balanced by savory notes from herbs and aromatics. It’s an ideal accompaniment to turkey, chicken, or pork, adding a deliciously earthy flavor to your meal.
Ingredients
- 200g Cooked Chestnuts (chopped): Adds a rich, earthy flavor.
- 50g Unsalted Butter: Adds richness and moisture.
- 1 Large Onion (finely chopped): Provides a savory base.
- 100g Fresh Breadcrumbs: Helps bind the stuffing.
- 2 tbsp Fresh Parsley (chopped): Adds freshness and color.
- 1 tsp Fresh Thyme (chopped, or 1/2 tsp dried thyme): Adds a subtle, herby flavor.
- 1/4 tsp Ground Nutmeg: Adds warmth and depth.
- Salt and Pepper (to taste): Balances the flavors.
- 1 Large Egg (beaten): Binds the ingredients together.
Instructions
Step 1. Preheat the Oven (if baking separately)
If you’re baking the stuffing separately, preheat the oven to 180°C (160°C fan) or 350°F.
Step 2. Sauté the Onion
In a skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and sauté for about 5-7 minutes, or until it becomes soft and translucent. Remove from heat and let it cool slightly.
Step 3. Mix the Stuffing Ingredients
In a large mixing bowl, combine the sautéed onion, chopped chestnuts, fresh breadcrumbs, parsley, thyme, nutmeg, salt, and pepper. Mix well to ensure the ingredients are evenly distributed.
Step 4. Add the Beaten Egg
Add the beaten egg to the mixture and mix thoroughly until all ingredients are well combined. The egg will help bind the stuffing, giving it a cohesive texture.
Step 5. Stuff the Bird or Bake Separately
- If Stuffing a Bird: Spoon the chestnut stuffing into the cavity of your turkey, chicken, or other bird. Roast according to your recipe’s instructions.
- If Baking Separately: Transfer the stuffing mixture to a greased baking dish, cover with foil, and bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes. For a crispy top, remove the foil during the last 10 minutes of baking.
Step 6. Serve and Enjoy
Once cooked, remove the stuffing from the bird or baking dish and transfer it to a serving bowl. Garnish with extra parsley if desired.
