Description
James Martin’s Double Chocolate Brownies feature a classic brownie base with added chocolate chips for a double dose of chocolatey goodness. The combination of melted dark chocolate and chocolate chips gives these brownies a rich flavor and satisfying texture, making them a luxurious dessert.
Ingredients
For the Brownies:
- Dark chocolate (200g, chopped): For a rich, chocolatey base.
- Butter (200g, unsalted): Adds moisture and richness.
- Caster sugar (300g): Sweetens the brownies and creates a slightly crisp top.
- Eggs (4 large): Binds the ingredients and gives a soft, fudgy texture.
- Plain flour (100g): Provides structure while keeping brownies fudgy.
- Cocoa powder (2 tbsp): Deepens the chocolate flavor.
- Chocolate chips (100g): Add extra chocolate for a gooey texture in every bite.
Optional Add-Ins:
- Chopped walnuts or pecans (50g): For a nutty crunch.
- Salt flakes (for sprinkling on top): Adds a touch of contrast to the sweetness.
Instructions
Step 1: Preheat the Oven and Prepare the Tin
- Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F) or 160°C (fan).
- Grease and line a 9×9-inch square baking tin with parchment paper, leaving a bit of overhang for easy removal.
Step 2: Melt the Chocolate and Butter
- In a small saucepan over low heat, melt the dark chocolate and butter together, stirring occasionally until smooth.
- Remove from heat and let it cool slightly.
Step 3: Beat the Sugar and Eggs
- In a large mixing bowl, whisk the caster sugar and eggs together until the mixture is thick, pale, and frothy.
Step 4: Add the Melted Chocolate
- Gently fold the slightly cooled chocolate and butter mixture into the egg and sugar mixture until fully incorporated.
Step 5: Sift in the Dry Ingredients
- Sift the plain flour and cocoa powder into the bowl. Fold gently until just combined to avoid overmixing.
Step 6: Add Chocolate Chips and Optional Mix-Ins
- Fold in the chocolate chips, and add chopped nuts if desired for extra crunch.
Step 7: Bake the Brownies
- Pour the batter into the prepared baking tin, smoothing the top with a spatula.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until the top has formed a crust and a skewer inserted into the center comes out with a few moist crumbs (this keeps them fudgy).
Step 8: Cool and Slice
- Allow the brownies to cool in the tin for about 10-15 minutes, then lift them out using the parchment paper overhang and transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
- Once cooled, slice into squares and enjoy.
