Description

Mary Berry Apple and Blackberry Crumble is a traditional British dessert made with juicy apples and sweet-tart blackberries, topped with a golden, crumbly layer of butter, flour, and sugar. The fruit is cooked down to a soft, flavorful base, while the crumble topping adds a satisfying crunch. Serve it warm with custard, cream, or ice cream for the ultimate treat.

Ingredients

Scale

To make 6 servings, gather the following ingredients:

For the Fruit Filling:

  • 4 large apples, peeled, cored, and sliced: A mix of cooking apples like Bramley and sweet apples works well.
  • 200g (1 ½ cups) fresh blackberries: Adds a tart and sweet contrast to the apples.
  • 50g (¼ cup) caster sugar: Sweetens the fruit mixture.
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice: This helps balance the sweetness and prevents the apples from browning.

For the Crumble Topping:

  • 175g (1 ½ cups) plain flour: Forms the base of the crumble.
  • 100g (½ cup) unsalted butter, chilled and cubed: Gives the topping a rich, buttery flavor.
  • 75g (⅓ cup) demerara sugar: Adds sweetness and crunch to the crumble.
  • 50g (⅓ cup) rolled oats (optional): For added texture in the crumble.

Instructions

Step 1: Preheat the Oven

  1. Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F).

Step 2: Prepare the Fruit Filling

  1. In a mixing bowl, toss the apple slices with 1 tbsp lemon juice and 50g caster sugar.
  2. Place the apples evenly in the bottom of a medium baking dish.
  3. Scatter the blackberries on top of the apples, distributing them evenly.

Step 3: Make the Crumble Topping

  1. In a large bowl, mix the plain flour and demerara sugar.
  2. Rub the cubed butter into the flour and sugar mixture using your fingertips until it resembles coarse breadcrumbs.
  3. Stir in the rolled oats (if using) for extra texture.

Step 4: Assemble the Crumble

  1. Sprinkle the crumble mixture evenly over the fruit filling, making sure all the fruit is covered.
  2. Gently press the crumble down with the back of a spoon to compact it slightly.

Step 5: Bake the Crumble

  1. Place the dish in the preheated oven and bake for 40-45 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the fruit is bubbling around the edges.

Step 6: Cool and Serve

  1. Remove the crumble from the oven and allow it to cool for 5-10 minutes before serving.
  2. Serve warm with custard, ice cream, or double cream for an indulgent dessert.
