Description

A sloppy joe is a sandwich filled with minced beef cooked in a tangy tomato-based sauce. Jamie Oliver’s take gives it a fresher, healthier spin with added vegetables, herbs, and spices. The filling is saucy, hearty, and slightly sweet, making it a family favorite that’s quick to prepare and satisfying to eat.

Ingredients

  • Lean minced beef (500g / 1 lb) – the star of the filling.
  • Onion (1 medium, finely chopped) – adds sweetness.
  • Carrot (1 small, grated) – sneaks in extra veggies.
  • Red bell pepper (1, diced) – adds crunch and color.
  • Garlic cloves (2, minced) – boosts savory depth.
  • Tomato puree (2 tbsp) – intensifies tomato flavor.
  • Tinned chopped tomatoes (1 can, 400g) – creates the sauce.
  • Worcestershire sauce (1 tbsp) – classic tangy touch.
  • Brown sugar (1 tbsp) – balances acidity.
  • Smoked paprika (1 tsp) – adds a subtle smokiness.
  • Olive oil (1 tbsp) – for sautéing.
  • Salt and pepper (to taste) – essential seasoning.
  • Burger buns (4–6, toasted) – to serve.

Instructions

  • Heat oil – warm olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat.

  • Cook vegetables – sauté onion, carrot, garlic, and bell pepper until softened.

  • Add beef – crumble in minced beef and cook until browned.

  • Stir in seasoning – add smoked paprika, salt, and pepper.

  • Build sauce – mix in tomato puree, chopped tomatoes, Worcestershire sauce, and sugar.

  • Simmer filling – cook uncovered for 12–15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until sauce thickens.

  • Toast buns – lightly toast burger buns to hold filling better.

  • Assemble sloppy joes – spoon filling into buns and serve hot.
