Description
This crumble features a combination of juicy blackberries and soft, sweet apples, topped with a buttery crumble made from flour, sugar, and butter. It’s baked until golden and crisp on top, while the fruit bubbles beneath. The contrast between the sweet, crunchy topping and the soft, fruity filling makes it an all-time favorite dessert.
Ingredients
For the Filling:
- 500g apples (peeled, cored, and sliced)
- 250g blackberries (fresh or frozen)
- 50g caster sugar
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon (optional)
- 1 tbsp lemon juice
For the Crumble Topping:
- 150g plain flour
- 100g cold butter (cut into cubes)
- 75g demerara sugar (or caster sugar)
- 50g rolled oats (optional, for added crunch)
Instructions
Step 1: Preheat the Oven
Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F). Lightly grease a medium-sized baking dish.
Step 2: Prepare the Fruit Filling
In a large bowl, toss the sliced apples and blackberries with the sugar, cinnamon (if using), and lemon juice. Transfer the fruit mixture to the prepared baking dish, spreading it evenly across the bottom.
Step 3: Make the Crumble Topping
In another bowl, rub the cold butter into the flour using your fingertips until the mixture resembles coarse breadcrumbs. Stir in the sugar and rolled oats (if using) to complete the crumble topping.
Step 4: Assemble the Crumble
Sprinkle the crumble mixture evenly over the fruit filling, ensuring the entire surface is covered. Don’t press it down; you want the topping to stay light and crumbly.
Step 5: Bake the Crumble
Place the baking dish in the preheated oven and bake for 35-40 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the fruit is bubbling around the edges. If the topping starts to brown too quickly, you can cover it with foil for the last 10 minutes of baking.
Step 6: Serve
Once baked, remove the crumble from the oven and let it cool slightly before serving. Serve the crumble warm with custard, cream, or ice cream for an extra indulgent treat.
