Jamie Oliver Inspired Hoisin Sauce Recipe

Jamie Oliver Hoisin Sauce

Jamie Oliver’s hoisin sauce is a savory and slightly sweet Asian condiment known for its complex flavor. It combines soy sauce, peanut butter (or black bean paste), honey, garlic, vinegar, and aromatic spices. The result is a smooth, thick, and glossy sauce that works well as a marinade, dip, or glaze.

Ingredients

  • 3 tbsp soy sauce – Use low-sodium if desired.

  • 2 tbsp peanut butter or black bean paste – For creaminess and depth.

  • 1 tbsp honey or maple syrup – Adds sweetness and balance.

  • 1 tsp rice vinegar – Brings acidity to round out the flavor.

  • 1 tsp sesame oil – Adds nuttiness and aroma.

  • 1 garlic clove, minced – For a punch of savory flavor.

  • ½ tsp Chinese five-spice powder – A signature hoisin spice blend.

  • ¼ tsp chili flakes (optional) – Adds a touch of heat.

Instructions

Step 1: Combine the main ingredients

Add soy sauce, peanut butter (or black bean paste), honey, rice vinegar, and sesame oil into a bowl.

Step 2: Add flavor boosters

Mix in the minced garlic, Chinese five-spice powder, and chili flakes if using.

Step 3: Whisk until smooth

Use a whisk or spoon to blend everything into a smooth, thick sauce.

Step 4: Taste and adjust

You can add more honey for sweetness or more soy sauce for saltiness.

Step 5: Store the sauce

Pour into an airtight jar and refrigerate. Let it sit for 15–20 minutes before using to allow flavors to meld.
