Description
Jamie Oliver’s Sausage Rolls from his 30 Minute Meals series is a simplified version of the classic British favorite. Made with flavorful sausage meat wrapped in golden puff pastry, these sausage rolls are baked to perfection in no time. The recipe is designed to deliver maximum taste with minimal effort.
Ingredients
- Puff pastry (1 sheet): Ready-made, for convenience and flakiness.
- Sausage meat (450g / 1 lb): High-quality sausage meat or sausages with skins removed.
- English mustard (1 tbsp): Adds a subtle kick to the filling.
- Egg (1, beaten): For glazing the pastry and achieving a golden finish.
- Fennel seeds (1 tsp, optional): For added flavor and a touch of sweetness.
- Salt and pepper: To taste and season the filling.
Instructions
1. Prepare the Sausage Meat:
- Season the sausage meat: In a bowl, mix the sausage meat with mustard, salt, pepper, and fennel seeds (if using). If you’re using sausages, remove the skins first. Mix well to combine all the flavors.
2. Roll Out the Pastry:
- Prepare the puff pastry: On a lightly floured surface, roll out the puff pastry to a thickness of about ⅛ inch if needed. Cut the pastry into two long strips.
3. Assemble the Sausage Rolls:
- Place the sausage meat: Divide the sausage meat into two equal portions and form each into a long log. Place each log along the center of the pastry strips.
- Seal the pastry: Brush the edges of the pastry with a little water, then fold the pastry over the sausage meat to seal. Press the edges down with a fork to ensure they’re sealed properly.
4. Cut and Glaze:
- Slice into smaller rolls: Cut the long rolls into smaller, bite-sized pieces, around 2 inches long.
- Brush with egg: Place the sausage rolls on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Brush the tops with beaten eggs to give them a golden finish when baked.
5. Bake the Sausage Rolls:
- Preheat the oven: Set the oven to 200°C (400°F).
- Bake: Place the sausage rolls in the oven and bake for 15-20 minutes, or until the pastry is golden and the sausage meat is cooked through.
