Description

Mary Berry’s Baked Apples are whole apples, cored and stuffed with a mixture of dried fruits, sugar, and spices, then baked until soft and golden. This dessert is a great way to use fresh apples and requires minimal ingredients, making it a convenient and wholesome dessert.

Ingredients

Scale

  • 4 large cooking apples (such as Bramley)
  • 50g soft brown sugar
  • 50g raisins or sultanas
  • 25g chopped nuts (such as walnuts or pecans)
  • 25g butter (cut into small cubes)
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 150ml apple juice or water
  • Optional: Custard or cream, for serving

Instructions

Step 1: Preheat the Oven

Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F).

Step 2: Core the Apples

Using an apple corer or a small paring knife, carefully core the apples, making sure to remove the seeds but leave the bottom intact to hold the filling. Place the apples in a baking dish.

Step 3: Prepare the Filling

In a bowl, mix together the soft brown sugar, raisins (or sultanas), chopped nuts, and ground cinnamon. Stir until the ingredients are well combined.

Step 4: Stuff the Apples

Spoon the filling mixture into the cored apples, packing it down lightly. Add a small cube of butter on top of each filled apple.

Step 5: Add Liquid and Bake

Pour the apple juice or water into the baking dish around the apples to prevent them from drying out during baking. Place the baking dish in the preheated oven and bake for 30-40 minutes, or until the apples are soft but still holding their shape. Baste the apples with the liquid halfway through cooking to keep them moist.

Step 6: Serve

Once baked, remove the apples from the oven and let them cool slightly. Serve the apples warm with a drizzle of custard, cream, or a scoop of vanilla ice cream for an extra indulgent treat.
