Microwave Mug Cake Recipe

Microwave Mug Cake

Microwave Mug Cake is a single-serve dessert made directly in a coffee mug and cooked in the microwave. It typically contains flour, sugar, cocoa powder (for chocolate versions), oil or butter, and a leavening agent like baking powder. You simply mix, microwave, and enjoy straight from the mug.

Ingredients

Scale

    • 4 tbsp all-purpose flour – Forms the cake base.

    • 2 tbsp granulated sugar – Adds sweetness.

    • 1 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder – Omit if making vanilla mug cake.

    • 1/4 tsp baking powder – Helps the cake rise in the microwave.

    • Pinch of salt – Balances flavors.

    • 3 tbsp milk – Use any type; dairy or plant-based both work.

    • 1 tbsp vegetable oil or melted butter – Keeps the cake moist.

    • 1/4 tsp vanilla extract – For depth of flavor.

    • Optional: 1 tbsp chocolate chips or chopped nuts – For extra indulgence.

Instructions

  • Mix dry ingredients
In a microwave-safe mug, combine flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, and a pinch of salt.

  • Add wet ingredients
Stir in milk, oil or butter, and vanilla extract. Mix well until smooth and no dry lumps remain.

  • Fold in extras
Add chocolate chips or other mix-ins if using. Stir gently.

  • Microwave the mug
Cook on high for 1 minute to 1 minute 15 seconds, depending on microwave power. The cake should rise and appear set.

  • Cool briefly and enjoy
Let it sit for 1–2 minutes before eating. Top with whipped cream or ice cream if desired.
