Description

A sloppy joe is traditionally a sandwich made with seasoned minced beef cooked in a tangy tomato sauce, then piled into soft burger buns. Nadiya Hussain’s take on this comfort food elevates the recipe with a mix of spices, fresh vegetables, and flavorful sauces, giving it a unique twist while keeping the sloppy, saucy essence that makes it irresistible.

Ingredients

    • Minced beef (500g / 1 lb, lean preferred) – the base of the filling.

    • Onion (1 medium, finely chopped) – adds sweetness and depth.

    • Red bell pepper (1, diced) – for color and crunch.

    • Garlic cloves (2, minced) – boosts savory flavor.

    • Tomato puree (2 tbsp) – rich tomato base.

    • Tinned chopped tomatoes (1 can, 400g) – forms the sauce.

    • Brown sugar (1 tbsp) – balances acidity.

    • Worcestershire sauce (1 tbsp) – classic tangy seasoning.

    • Soy sauce (1 tbsp) – adds umami richness.

    • Paprika (1 tsp) – smoky flavor.

    • Cumin (1 tsp) – warm spice note.

    • Salt and pepper (to taste) – balances flavors.

    • Olive oil (1 tbsp) – for cooking.

    • Burger buns (4–6, toasted) – to serve.

Instructions

  • Prepare pan – heat olive oil in a large frying pan over medium heat.

  • Cook vegetables – add onion, garlic, and bell pepper; sauté until softened.

  • Brown beef – add minced beef and cook until browned, breaking it up with a spoon.

  • Add seasoning – stir in paprika, cumin, salt, and pepper.

  • Stir in sauces – mix in tomato puree, tinned tomatoes, soy sauce, Worcestershire sauce, and brown sugar.

  • Simmer filling – reduce heat and cook for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until thickened.

  • Toast buns – lightly toast burger buns for sturdiness.

  • Assemble sloppy joes – spoon generous amounts of filling into buns and serve hot.
