Description
Jamie Oliver’s Cheese Toastie features thick slices of bread filled with a rich blend of cheeses, cooked to perfection with butter for a crisp, golden crust and oozy center. Additions like mustard or caramelized onions can take it to the next level, making it a versatile treat.
Ingredients
Basic Ingredients
- Bread (2 thick slices): Choose sourdough, white, or whole-grain bread.
- Cheddar Cheese (100g, grated): A sharp cheese for a strong flavor.
- Butter (1 tbsp): Softened, for spreading.
Optional Add-Ins
- Dijon Mustard (1 tsp): Adds a tangy kick.
- Caramelized Onions (2 tbsp): For sweetness.
- Ham or Bacon (optional): For a meaty addition.
Instructions
Step 1: Prepare the bread and cheese
Grate the cheddar cheese and set it aside. Spread butter evenly on one side of each bread slice. If desired, spread a thin layer of Dijon mustard on the unbuttered side of one slice.
Step 2: Assemble the toastie
Place one slice of bread, buttered side down, in a skillet or sandwich press. Sprinkle the grated cheese evenly over the top. Add any optional fillings like caramelized onions or ham, then top with the second slice of bread, buttered side up.
Step 3: Cook the toastie
- On the stove: Heat a non-stick skillet over medium heat. Cook the toastie for 3-4 minutes on each side, pressing gently with a spatula, until the bread is golden and crispy and the cheese is melted.
- In a sandwich press: Preheat the press and cook the toastie for 4-5 minutes, or until golden and melted.
Step 4: Serve
Remove the toastie from the skillet or press and let it cool slightly before slicing in half. Serve immediately with a side of tomato soup or a simple salad.
